Tucked away on the edge of Yeovil, The Great Lyde has long been a favourite spot for locals and visitors alike. It’s a place where good company, hearty food, and a friendly pint come together. Steeped in local history, the pub has been part of the community for decades. It has evolved with the times while keeping its traditional warmth and character at heart.

The Rich History of The Great Lyde

But do you know the history behind the building? The Great Lyde hasn't always been a pub. It actually originated as a farm, with history dating back to the Domesday Book in 1086. It was converted into a pub in the 1980s by Palmers Brewery.

The Lyde was a manor in its own right back in 1086, covering a vast area. The estate is thought to have spanned from Combe Street Lane, covering the Mudford Road area, and stretching down to Sherborne Road. Over the years, the expanse of the manor decreased until it resembled more of a large farm.

The site is steeped in history. It gained its name 'Great Lyde' to distinguish it from its smaller counterpart, Little Lyde Farm. The Lyde was farmed for many years by a gentleman named William Forbes. After his death, the farm was occupied by Charles Marsh and his wife and children. At the time of the Tithe Appointment in 1846, the farm was owned by local man William Hawker Helyar, who resided in West Coker.

Later, history confirms that the farm was indeed a dairy farm. Records state that the next known owner of the farm, Robert Walden, and his three sons were dairymen.

In 1871, the farm gained the name Great Lyde Farm. However, this name didn't last long. George Pridham took over the farm in 1881 and renamed it Upper Lyde Farm, a name that had not been used in over 700 years.

The Transformation into a Pub

The farmhouse was abandoned in the late 1960s. It was converted into a public house in the 1980s by Palmers Brewery. The pub's farmhouse origins are evident, with the original skittle alley being rediscovered and reopened. This feature has proved to be very popular with the locals!

The pub faced closure in 2023, with proposals to turn the site into a school for special educational needs. However, in true community spirit, the locals rallied together in spectacular style. They highlighted the pub's vital role in the community.

Mike Krzyzanowski and his family have held proud tenure at the pub since 2016. They have upheld the warm, community spirit that everyone has grown to know and love.
